Oil Seeds

Oilseeds are seeds grown primarily for the production of edible oils. In the broader sense, peanuts and soybeans can be considered oilseeds. Vegetable oil is obtained by pressing the seeds and then extracting the oil. The cake or meal obtained in the extraction is a rich source of proteins: sunflower and peanut meals contain 40–50% and 50–60% proteins, respectively. Other oilseed meals contain 35–45% proteins. Soybean, rapeseed, cottonseed, sunflower and peanut represent a 69, 12, 7, 5 and 3% of world protein meal production, respectively.
